
Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev spoke by phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi yesterday.
On behalf of the entire SCO Secretariat and in his personal capacity, Yermekbayev expressed his deepest condolences for the casualties that occurred in Iran between January 8 and 10, 2026, and wished the families of the victims a speedy recovery and the injured a speedy recovery.
The Secretary-General reiterated the position of SCO member states that mutual respect for sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity; equality and mutual benefit; non-interference in internal affairs; and the non-use or threat of force are the foundation for the stable development of international relations.
Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi briefed Yermekbayev on the current situation in Iran and thanked the SCO Secretary-General for his condolences and well wishes. Araqchi expressed his expectation that SCO member states would unite and support the Iranian people.
